Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Bingo!

While the game has historically been enjoyed by women, an increasing number of men are joining them. This said, it is difficult to imagine that hordes of gents on a stag night would rejoice at the thought of forgoing the more traditional (and colourful!) aspects of a bachelor party for the sake of either online bingo or for what is increasingly being enjoyed by women across the land: bingo bridal showers.

Yes, you heard it correctly. Bridal shower bingo is big, and it is getting bigger.

The game is played just like a regular game of bingo, but with a few key differences. Chief of these is related to the cards. Where a regular game will use numbers which are called and then marked off on the cards of players, the cards in a bridal shower will be covered with words. Templates can be downloaded from the Internet where these words are related to the occasion, and will normally be generic things like “babies”, “ring” and “flowers”.

However, there is obviously the opportunity for the group to have a little fun. The Chief Bridesmaid or Maid of Honour that organises the shower will have a chance to include words that are personal to the bride-to-be, and ergo increase the laughter volume during the occasion. Past boyfriends, drunken hazes and romantic tales are all fair-game – just as they would be in the bingo hall – but the organiser must take care not to offend mother-in-laws just before the wedding, lest the temperature drop from red hot to below zero.

When the host of the bridal shower – usually the Maid of Honour – draws the words from the “hat”, it can therefore be a surprise to the bride as much as the other guests. Then as the words are called the guests mark them off from their cards, as the players would in a regular game. They can join lines vertically, horizontally or diagonally, and special prizes are given to the winner, usually a keepsake reminiscent of the occasion. This could be a small piece of specialist jewellery or a framed picture of the bride-elect with the group, and perhaps a shot taken during a game at their regular bingo hall when the same gang enjoyed a particularly memorable night.

As mentioned above there are now a large number of men playing online bingo, but the traditional rowdiness of a bachelor party leaves the mind to boggle as to the shenanigans that would ensue should “bachelor bingo” become a new phenomenon. For now, it seems, this particular version of the game remains exclusively for the ladies.
