Self fulfilling prophecies are facinating! They can cause crashes on the stockmarket, pumps to run out of fuel and supermarket shelves to be devoid of toilet paper.
Like a combination of Chinese whispers... (or more politically correct: the telephone game) and the butterfly effect, a conversation topic "Perhaps we could run out of fuel if..." can easily morph into, "We will run out of fuel" which passes on incredibly quickly through word-of-mouth and social media. A tinder-box flaring out of control, and no-one can stop it.
Let's just hope that when people have filled up their tanks and realise that storing petrol isn't usually a safe idea, it all calms down and blows away.
We've seen this before, we'll see it again.
